Frequently Asked Questions

Screen printing is a printing technique that uses a screen to transfer ink onto an item. In screen printing, the item to be printed is placed under the screen and ink is applied to it. The ink then travels through a mesh, or screen, which holds it back from the parts of the item that are not to be printed. The screen can be removed once the ink has dried, leaving behind a design on the item.

Screen printing is one of the most cost-effective and best quality ways to print on garments and is ideal for producing multi-colour images or designs on t-shirts, hoodies, and other materials. This method is used by companies like Merch Montreal to create custom printed products for their customers.

The process consists of several steps:

1. Preparing the screen and applying the stencils

2. Applying ink to one side of the screen (usually with rollers)

3. Removing excess ink from the edges of each stencil hole with squeegees or blades until all of it has been removed from each hole

4. Wiping up any remaining ink from around each stencil hole area (this is called flood wiping)

5. Drying time before moving onto another color

6. Printing another layer of ink on top of previous layers (repeat steps 1-5 for each layer)

The cost of custom screen printed shirts depends on four factors.

First, the number of placements on each item. Printing just on the front of a t-shirt, for example, will be less expensive than printing on the front and back and/or sleeve as more labor is required.

Second, the number of colors in the design will also affect the final price as each color requires an individual screen and is applied one at a time. Hence, more colors means more screen, more labor and a higher cost.

Thirdly, the type and quality of item will also affect the final price. Obviously, a hoodie costs more per unit than a t-shirt, but also different brands and models of t-shirts will have different prices depending on the quality of the fabric and stitching.

And finally, the number of units will also affect the total price of the order as setup fees and screen can be spread over more shirts on larger orders thereby reducing the cost per unit.

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. Embroidery can be sewn by hand or machine, but machine embroidery is used for commercial projects that are more intricate and detailed.

Machine embroidery uses a computerized embroidery machine to stitch patterns from digitized designs. These machines make it possible to add logos or other designs, as well as decorative stitches that can’t be made by hand to various types of items including t-shirts, totes bags, hoodies, caps, and more.

The cost of a custom embroidery project depends on three factors.

First, the size of the embroidery will determine how much time is required per item. In other words, the larger the design, the more time it takes to embroider and the more it will cost per unit.

Second, the type and quality of item will also affect the final price. By definitaion, a hoodie costs more per unit than a t-shirt, but also different brands and models of t-shirts will have different pricing depending on the quality of the fabric and stitching.

And finally, the number of units will also affect the price of the order as setup fees can be spread over more items on larger orders thereby reducing the cost per unit
